After a shocking killing spree terrorizes a city, all the evidence seems to lead to one man, James Barr. During the interrogation all Barr will do is write "Get Jack Reacher for me." Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) was an Army Military Police officer but now he's just a drifter with no ties anywhere. After hearing Barr is in custody Jack turns up in the D.A.s office asking inquisitive questions. It's there he meets Barr's young Defense lawyer Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), who's also the D.A.'s daughter. She convinces Jack to help her investigate the crime, but as they get closer to the truth their own lives are put in jeopardy.
What Worked - The opening of Jack Reacher was simply brilliant. It grabs your attention as you witness a dramatic and horrifying shooting, from the perspective of the sniper. Tom Cruise's character is introduced a bit later. Tom's previous performances have always been a hit or miss for me, but I actually really enjoyed his performance and character in this movie.Jack Reacher reminded me a lot of Jack Bauer from the TV show '24', but without all the screaming and the overwhelming intensity. He comes across as a cool, collected guy, who will do anything for justice. I also liked Rosamund Pike's performance, although I may be biased, because I think she's gorgeous. Oh and the bad guy played by Werner Herzog is extremely creepy. There's a scene where he gives one of his henchmen an ultimatum to do "something" or die. The scene is very effective, and left me squirming in my seat. The music in Jack Reacher also never overwhelms the film. I kept thinking to myself, "this is a pretty quiet movie." Even during some of the fight scenes there's little to no music. This normally annoys me, but I felt like it adds to the movie's intensity. The fight scenes were also wonderfully brutal. Jack Reacher is certainly not afraid to take a cheap shot. So men be warned. The movie is also pretty funny, full of plenty of laugh out loud moments.
What Didn't Work - There's a point in the movie where Jack is being attacked by two guys with bats, but they end up comedically hitting everything else except Jack. I realize this scene is supposed to be funny, but it comes across more as stupid and unrealistic. The movie runs a bit too long and there's also a brief but unnecessary moment where we see a woman wearing a thong.
Overall - Jack Reacher is a really good time at the movies. Tom Cruise does a good job, there's some sweet fight scenes and a beautiful girl. What more do you want from a film? I'd say it's worth the trip to the theater.
A Quote from the Movie -
Jack Reacher - You think I'm a hero? I am not a hero.
So what do you think?
